Latvian beach volleyball has secured its men's and women's berths for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after winning its qualifying match on Sunday.
The FIVB Tokyo Beach Volleyball Qualifying Tournament began on Wednesday in Haiyang City, east China's Shandong Province, with 16 men's and women's teams from the top 15 of the FIVA rankings taking part in the five-day competition.
The Latvian women's team beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on Sunday after claiming the men's qualifying title the day before.
The Czech pair are former world number one, while Latvia won the 2019 European Championships. The Czech Republic trailed by two points in the decisive third set, winning 13-9, as the Latvian pair came from behind to win 17-15.
This marks the first time a Latvian beach volleyball pair has entered the Olympics.
Another qualifying quota for the Spanish women's team and the Italian men's team.
The winning team from the Haiyang qualifiers will automatically enter the Tokyo Olympics along with the top 15 teams in the world. Chinese players Wang Fan/Xia Xinyi, who were ranked 20th and were eliminated in the qualifying round, will participate in more games to improve their ranking.
This qualification marks the highest level of beach volleyball competition in China.
Haiyang is a coastal city in eastern China's Shandong Province, famous for its fine-grained sand and national forest park. It became a national beach sports destination after hosting the 3rd Asian Beach Games in 2012, following other national and world-class events such as the Beach Soccer World Cup and the National Beach Volleyball Tour.
