Wang Nan, deputy director of the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA), became the first Asian woman elected to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Council on Wednesday.
Wang received 122 votes out of 206 to become an individual council member at the 52nd IAAF Congress, the world championships that kicked off on Friday in Doha and run until October 6 in the capital of Qatar.
"I think this successful election is the recognition of China by the world athletics family," said Wang. Wang is the fourth Chinese to hold this position, following Lou Dapeng, Luo Chaoyi and Du Zhaocai, and she is the first Asian woman ever to enter the IAAF. committee.
She said: "The CAA will continue to fulfill its obligations in the future, fulfill its commitments, have better exchanges with the world athletics family, and improve the level of the sport in China."
In an election earlier in the day, Britain's Sebastian Coe was re-elected as IAAF president by a unanimous vote.
Ximena Restrepo won Colombia's first track and field medal at the 1992 Olympics and was elected as the first female vice-president of the IAAF.
The other vice presidents are pole vaulting legend Sergei Bubka of Ukraine, Geoffrey Gardner of Norfolk Island and Prince Nawaf Bin Mohammed Al Saud of Saudi Arabia.
